"Body's a Temple" by Jay Brannan Music Video Analysis

Original Music Video:
Music Video Analysis:

Discontinuity is very prominent in this video as multiple shots are often displayed on screen at once. Whilst this may prevent viewers from being fully absorbed by the footage, I feel it is necessary, as this break in convention adds interest to an other wise very simple video. This forces viewers to focus on the lyrics, which –as discovered in my “Little Lion Man” analysis- is very important to fans of this genre.

The shots used don’t always directly relate to the song but have a sombre feel making them appropriate. Yet again this breaks with stereotypical music videos for songs of this nature, which would typically show the relationship in the song itself.
Because there is no storyline to the alternative footage to his performance, the shots vary vastly to decrease any monotony. In this respect the short takes and variance is good however it can still be boring as the video doesn’t require much attention to follow what is going on, on screen, therefore not engaging the viewer fully.
The entire video is de-saturated and grey scale, which helps create a cohesive element, tying the different shots together and exaggerating the artistic approach of the footage. The artistic approach is obvious in the alternative footage as the shots are quirky and simple, focusing on aesthetically pleasing shots. To add to this often effects are used such as: pull focuses; glare; duplication and overlay of footage; flashes; and a line effect (-which makes the footage it is used on seem old).
The performance sections of the video are shot using a stedi-cam where as the other sections often had a “home video” feel; especially during some of the footage replicating the perspective of someone walking in the street, which jolted and seemed hand-held. This highlighted the contrast between to two types of footage and made the alternative footage seem poor quality and unprofessional in comparison.
Finally there is a lot of movement in the videos via pans and tilts mainly in the performance sequences in the video adding more versatility.
